The Freedom Flotilla Coalition heard similar news of attack from the sky by drones and jamming of their communications on June 9, 2025. All of these incidents happened as the flotilla was moving towards the coast of Gaza. This included famous climate activist, Greta Thunberg, who joined activists in the effort to bring aid.

On June 9, 2025, spokespersons for the members of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition claimed they had been attacked by conflict drones. At the same time, the coalition suffered from communication jamming, interfering with their logistical coordination and information sharing capabilities. In each of these incidents, the safety and security of the activists was a powerful source of fear.

Activists held their raised hands above their heads in supplication as the IDF apparently boarded the ‘Madleen’ off of Gaza’s coast. Photos from the scene documented a truly electric moment. Greta Thunberg, the internationally-known climate activist, was among those onboard the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. Both the actions of the Israeli Navy, as well as the allegedly forcible boarding of the ‘Madleen’, have come under fire. Even Israel’s former Israeli Navy chief said that the next Gaza flotilla was handled badly. He described it as a “diplomatic failure” while highlighting the unique sensitivities and possible repercussions surrounding such operations. The status quo is now being closely monitored.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition’s mission was to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza. Those responsible for the drone attack and communications jamming owe everyone an explanation, including an accounting of their intent and actions. International observers are closely monitoring the events.
